## Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, behind "Super Size Me," dies at 53
Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, best known for his daring experiment in "Super Size Me," died Thursday in New York at the age of 53. His family gave the cause of death as complications from cancer.
Spurlock's 2004 documentary "Super Size Me" gained significant attention. For a month, they lived only on McDonald's food, eating an average of 5,000 calories a day and limited exercise. The film documented its negative health effects, sparking a conversation about the fast food industry's role in America's obesity crisis. "Super Size Me" earned Spurlock an Academy Award nomination and mainstream success.
"It was a sad day when we said goodbye to our brother Morgan," said Craig Spurlock, Morgan's brother and collaborator on many projects, in a statement released by the family. "Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man."
Spurlock's career continued beyond "Super Size Me." He directed other documentaries that explored various social issues, but faced controversy later in his career due to allegations of sexual misconduct.
